Many people blame PowerPoint for bad presentations, but it’s not PowerPoint’s problem. In fact, it’s not a technology problem at all. It’s a content problem. Most people treat presentations like an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant, where their job is to deliver as much information as possible to the audience. That’s just plain WRONG.
A presentation is not a restaurant, it’s a takeaway place.
It’s not about what you deliver, it’s about what the audience takes away with them. And that’s where the problem lies. The hierarchy of a presentation is simple:
what’s resolved is better than what’s repeated, which is better than what’s remembered, which is better than what’s recited.
When the audience takes action based on your presentation, that’s when you win. It doesn’t matter how much they loved it, the applause, the claps, the cheering. That’s not what you’re in business for. You’re in business for the audience taking the action you need them to take. If you need a better grasp on this, then definitely check this video out.
So, how do we get it right?
The first thing we have to do is look at our content. We need to have fewer, better ideas and deliver fewer, better messages. We need to make sure that the audience can easily understand and remember the most important information. And that’s where the problem lies. The human brain is wired to remember the things that are easiest for them to remember, not the things that are the most important.
There’s a great book called “The Three Minute Rules” by Brandt Pudding that suggests this:
It doesn’t matter how long you speak for, whether it’s 60 minutes in a boardroom or 25 minutes at a conference. All that matters is the three minutes or less that the audience takes away when they’re describing your talk to someone else.
Our job is to make sure that the three-minute summary they deliver is the same three minutes that we want them to remember.
So, the next time you’re preparing a presentation, think about the takeaway. What is the one message you want the audience to remember? And make sure that message is easy for them to understand and remember.
